The Government is proposing changes to the way Fiji’s yaqona industry is managed through the Yaqona (Kava) Bill 2026, which includes plans to establish a Fiji Yaqona Council. Speaking in Parliament during the Bill’s Second Reading, Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Minister Tomasi Tunabuna said the proposed framework would strengthen farmers’ representation while improving quality, traceability, market confidence and coordination across the industry. The 2024 National Yaqona Farming Household Census recorded 14,532 yaqona farming households and 17,200 farmers. About 93 percent of these households rely on yaqona as their main source of income. More than 11,000 plants believed to be marijuana were uprooted during a drug operation in the Nasuva farming area on October 2. The operation involved officers from Savusavu, the Northern Division Taskforce and the North Police Rugby team. Police are yet to establish the owner of the farm. Police are continuing investigations into the alleged tampering of exhibits at the Suva High Court, with an individual believed to be linked to the matter still being questioned. The individual is closely associated with one of the six persons of interest who have been directly charged in connection with the management of the exhibits. He is currently being questioned at the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters in Suva. Investigators are also continuing inquiries into the possible involvement of other persons of interest in the case.
