Federal Member for Parramatta Andrew Charlton has welcomed ALDI’s decision to remove the names of bathmats titled after Hindu deities, after raising the matter with the supermarket.
The products — bathroom floor mats named with the likenesses of Hindu Gods including Lord Shiva — caused concerns across his electorate of Parramatta, which is home to one of Australia’s largest Hindu populations.
“I thank ALDI for being cooperative and responsive to community concerns about these products,” Dr Charlton said.
“The Hindu community in Parramatta is vibrant and proud, and I will always make sure their voices are heard.”
ALDI has since removed the deity names of the ALDI Kirkton House Bath Mat and House Runner from its website.
