A delightful evening to embrace innovation, diversity, tempt the senses to reflect upon the spirit of the late Professor Epeli Hau’ofa and the late Dr Teresia Teaiwa, two Pacific giants of Academia. Oceania is Us by Prof Epeli Hau’ofa opened the door of opportunity for Oceania Woman through the vision of Ms Donina Va’a who was a former student of the late Professor Epeli Hau’ofa at the University of the South Pacific, Fiji. Her inspiration and passion are drawn from the works of these phenomenal minds echoing the spirit of Pasifika people connecting and sustained by the ocean.
Oceania Woman was inspired by the Pacific Women’s Celebrate Brilliance breakfast earlier this year, to connect, share the unique gifts&talents of Pacific women; to empower and inspire new opportunities for Pacific women.
A door opened mid-way through the production and aspiring soprano Ani Lewaniu joined accomplished mezzo-soprano Ana Fifita-Otai (a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, lead songstress for Oceania Woman Opera and niece of the late Professor Epeli Hau’ofa) and Lealosina Samuels also of Fiji and Samoan ethnicity to form the Oceania Woman trio. Hailing from Namosi with maternal links to Vanuabalavu, Lau, Fiji is Ani Lewaniu, a member of The University of the South Pacific Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies Pasifika Voices choir since 2012. She has performed and toured in productions such as Moana 2013, Malaga Brisbane 2014 and Malaga Honiara 2016.
The two young damsels Miss Ani Lewaniu and Lealosina Samuels are receiving classical vocal lessons and a unique experience in exposing their gifts whilst contributing to a project that has expectations of realising potential and creating opportunities for Pacific women and girls in need with proceeds to contribute to the Pacific Women’s Professional & Business Network Inc scholarship fund.
The powerful New Zealand born, San Francisco based Songstress, Ms Isabella Moore joins as a guest artist on the evening because of she too, believes in the vision. An incredible repertoire of popular classical music has been compiled for the first half and a production in the second half “Oceania is Us” directed by the internationally acclaimed Maestro Tuilagi Igelese Ete, Choirmaster & Pacific musical consultant for Disney’s Moana and Sir Peter Jackson’s Epic Lord of the Rings- The Fellowship of the Ring, choreographed by Letila Mitchell and her renowned troupe Rako Pasefika.Rako Pasefika is Fiji based group encompassing traditional Rotuman, Polynesian and Melanesian dance, rediscovering Myths and Legends through movement and music.

The lyrics co-written by Maestro Tuilagi Igelese Ete and Donina Va’a, have enormously been inspired by the works of Professor Epeli Hau’ofa, and Dr Teresia Teaiwa both of whom were deeply respected and connected to Fiji.
