The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Honorable Mereseini Vuniwaqa met with the newly appointed High Commissioner of India to Fiji, H.E Padmaja in Suva this morning.
Her Excellency Padmaja was welcomed at the Ministry Headquarters and during the meet, Hon. Vuniwaqa congratulated H.E Padmaja on her appointment.
The Ministry has had a long ongoing friendship with India, especially in the facilitation of training for rural Fijian women as solar engineers at the Barefoot College in India. This also includes donations of sewing machines in the previous by the Indian Government towards the Ministry’s sewing machine distribution program.
Hon. Vuniwaqa thanked the Indian Government for their assistance, especially as they were aimed at empowering the local communities in Fiji. She further stated that the meeting is but a stepping stone for further collaboration in relation to the policy mandate of the Ministry.
The Minister and the High Commissioner both acknowledged the ability and good sense in sharing knowledge and best practices to help the Fijian and the Indian governments continue to further improve the lives of their people through the work that the Ministry does.
