Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Waterways and Environment Hon. Dr. Mahendra Reddy received a courtesy call from Mr. Stephen Harris, Special Representative of the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Alliance (CCOA) at the Ministry of Agriculture headquarters in Raiwaqa yesterday.
Discussions focused on the importance of addressing the causes and consequences of marine pollution, particularly in small island states.
Hon. Reddy highlighted measures taken by the Ministry of Waterways and Environment, which included infrastructural developments such as sea wall protection and natural based solutions like the usage and planting of vetiver grass and rehabilitation and replanting of mangroves, all of which were currently in progress.
Minister Reddy also highlighted the Clean Environment Policy, which would contribute to Government’s long-term ambition to make Fiji cleaner for citizens and visitors, through self-compliance and enforcement of the Litter Act 2008.
He said the policy provides guidance for securing a cleaner Fiji for all Fijians through a decentralized community based, awareness, readiness and litter enforcement program(s).
A proposal would be submitted by CCOA Special Representative, Mr. Harris on how the organization could assist the Fijian Government in ensuring cleaner and safer oceans.
