The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Mereseini Vuniwaqa officially handed over the requirements of an income generating project (IGP) to the Senibiau Women’s Group in Dreketi Village in Cakaudrove yesterday.

The IGP equipment includes a solar panel and baking equipment with additional requests such as a television set and water tank also handed over during this gathering.

Minister Vuniwaqa said women play a key role in the development of their community through income-generating projects that improves their livelihood.

She said the ministry aims to empower women and encourage them to work within their communities with the aim of enhancing their livelihoods and their communities.

“Income generating projects through the women’s group is a key tool in the financing of community projects,” Minister Vuniwaqa said.

She also acknowledged the support shown by the men and the community members towards these income generating projects and stressed that this support for the women will help develop the livelihoods of their families and community at large.

Senibiau Women’s Group president, Mrs Lusiana Dirorovakanace thanked the Ministry for the quick response to their request after their last visit to the community.

Mrs Dirorovakanace said the items received will help them to bake during night time which will increase their production of bread per day as there was an increase in demand from the community and nearby villages.

“The solar power will be used at the women’s resource centre by our school children for studying at night as most of the time they use candles and kerosene lamps. This will surely improve the academic achievements for our children” she added.

Dreketi village representative, Mr Sowani Turagabola said that this assistance is a huge contribution to the empowerment of women and also a timely mother’s day gift for the Senibiau Women’s Group.

A talanoa session was held with the men and women of the community after the official handing over of the income generating project, whereby the Government’s assistance programs towards families and communities were discussed.
