More than 300 Fijians in Tukavesi have benefitted from the Solar Hybrid Project following the commissioning today by the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Disaster Management and Meteorological Services Hon. Jone Usamate.

The $1 million investment by government will assist 372 Fijians, 92 homes and the nearby Kama District School.

While officiating at the event, Minister Usamate said the solar hybrid project was part of Government’s work in granting electricity access for all Fijians by 2021.

“For the past 10 years Government has invested more than $230 million on Rural Electrification Projects,” Minister Usamate said.

“This involves work on the EFL Grid Extension, Solar Home Systems, Micro-hydro and Energy Hybrid Systems.”

Minister Usamate said this year, Government allocated $61.5 million in the 2018/2019 budget, which was a three-fold increase since 2014.

“The increase in budget and the increase in accessibility for all Fijians over the past years are positive signs of your Government’s commitment,” he said.

“Government will continue to work and ensure that no Fijian household will be left in the dark but to all have electricity by 2021.”

Minister Usamate urged elders and parents to make use of the electricity wisely and responsibly.

“Use this service to enhance income generating activities and create business opportunities , so at the end of the day, you can better prepare your children for the future,” he said.
