Leaders and representatives of health sectors from the region are gathering in Suva for discussions at the Pacific Islands Meeting on sub-regional collaboration for specialized healthcare services.
The Minister for Health and Medical Services Hon.Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete while officiating at the event, said that challenges in the Pacific are real as the growing burden of diseases in the region is stretching the limits of regions capacity, causing countries to dig deep with the scarcity of what they have.
“It is therefore vitally important, as leaders, to ensure that our health resources are being employed in the most efficient and effective ways,” Minister Waqainabete said.
Minister Waqainabete said this was especially true for specialized healthcare services which he says happens to be the most expensive services of our health systems. “In Fiji we are doing our utmost to ensure that increased quality specialist services are available in the country.
Minister Waqainabete added that the Fijian Government recent venture into partnership with Australia based Aspen Medical Pty Limited will see overseas quality medical services brought right to the doorsteps of Fijian citizens at affordable costs.
The regional meeting is a two-day event taking place from the 26-27 February, 2019.
