The Fiji Association of Sport & National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), and the City of Oita and Oita Prefecture announced formalising the agreement on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic pre-games training camp on Tuesday, October 2019. Oita also extends the announcement to cater for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games athletes from Fiji. The announcement made further strengthens Fiji – Oita ongoing collaboration and marks a milestone in the relationship between our two countries.
Speaking at the Press Conference yesterday, Fiji’s Ambassador to Japan HE Mr. Isikeli Mataitoga said that Oita City is a very special city to Fiji, and one of the very first that established exchange ties with Fiji. He further extended appreciation towards Fiji friends and families in Oita, for their immeasurable contribution and support toward Fiji, and in particular, towards rugby and sports promotion that led to the formalisation of the agreement.
For the past years, reciprocal visits and intensive exchanges have been undertaken between Fiji and Oita. The Embassy is also pleased to note that partnering with the City of Oita will add value to the existing exchanges and allow us to make even greater progress in furthering people to people exchanges, business, and tourism.
The agreement formalises the cooperative relationship of Fiji and Oita, specifically, in the areas of cooperation and exchanges that will cover:
• Fiji pre-games training camp for the Tokyo 2020 Games to be carried out in Oita City;
• The exchanges of necessary information regarding the pre-games training camp; and
• The exchanges with local areas and organizations.
The Fiji Embassy in Tokyo will now coordinate closely with FASANOC, Oita City, Oita Prefecture, and relevant line agencies, in providing the best and smooth facilitation for Team Fiji preparation towards Tokyo 2020 Games.
Akita, Saga and Fukuoka have also made an offer to host Team Fiji.
