A six metre high, inflatable creature which is the new mascot of popular Asian arts festival, Parramasala, will appear for the first time at the Eat Street Vibes event in Church Street Parramatta this Saturday 5 November 2016.
- The mascot will appear on Lennox Bridge, Church Street between 11am and 4pm
- Artist Vipoo Srivilasa will be available for interviews and photos with the mascot 11am – 12pm.
Ceramic artist Vipoo Srivilasa worked closely with Parramasala to create the mascot and the inflatable interpretation was produced by The Inflatable Events Company. The inflatable is lit from within so also glows at night.
This is the first of two mascots planned for Parramasasla, which will take place 10-12 March 2017 at Prince Alfred Square and along the riverbank in Parramatta. This Saturday’s Eat Street Vibes event in Parramatta aims to give the community a little taste of Parramasala before the main event in March.
Artist Vipoo Srivilasa works predominantly in ceramics but also produces works on paper, mixed media sculptures and socially engaged art form. His recent work has been concerned with the ideas of contemporary social life and ethical issues as well as his experience living between two homes, Australia and Thailand. The works also show his passion for historical ceramic figurines.
Vipoo sees the Parramasala mascot as a giant porcelain doll decorated with blue and white colour.
Vipoo uses the colours and the design as a way to bring different cultures together. He also combined the traditional ceramic style of history with modern popular culture’s social media. The ‘V’ symbol is used in popular selfie social media culture and also represents a peaceful coming together of people.
The public are invited to help name the Parramasala mascot – simply take a photo with the mascot on Saturday at Eat Street Vibes with your suggested name and you’ll be in the running to win a $200 dinner at Ya Malaysia restaurant, Parramatta.
